Mimosa offers fiber-fast wireless broadband with MicroPoP architecture to urban, suburban areas

Mimosa launched Friday its Micro Point-of-Presence (MicroPoP) network architecture, enabling service providers to deliver gigabit wireless broadband to densely populated urban and suburban areas. Mimosa’s MicroPoP architecture combines the new Mimosa A5 access point and the Mimosa C5 endpoint client device using multipoint technology to deliver massive geo-capacity, directly addressing the ‘last mile’ challenges of service delivery in these areas.

Mimosa MicroPoP technology can be used by new wireless internet service providers to rapidly bring their services to market and compete with existing broadband providers in urban and suburban locations. In addition, incumbent service providers can add the technology to their arsenal of products, to enable them to more expeditiously and economically connect underserved areas.

“Until now there hasn’t been a broadband solution that can be rapidly and cost-effectively deployed in urban densities, and provide the high level of performance required to deliver next-generation internet applications,” said Jaime Fink, Co-Founder and Chief Product Officer at Mimosa.

The core of Mimosa’s MicroPoP solution, the A5 access point, with quad-sector antennas and massive MIMO technology, delivers high performance for high density short-range multipoint broadband applications. Deployed in a central point within a neighborhood, it elegantly provides wireless broadband connections to subscribers within 500 meters. It features GPS sync-enabled time division multiple access (TDMA) protocol, which ensures each client device precisely receives and transmits under the timing control of the access point, and eliminates the possibility of interference from neighboring A5 access points.

The compact form-factor of the A5 makes suburban or urban installations fast, easy and discreet, ideal for deployment on rooftops or street-level furniture. With more than 1 Gbps of aggregate capacity, the A5 is a fast multipoint solution purpose-built for high density deployments.

The C5 client device delivers superfast broadband directly into homes and businesses. It is Multi-User MIMO (MU-MIMO) capable, allowing multiple clients on the same access point to be coordinated to simultaneously share spectrum, improving scaling and spectral efficiency.

The C5 also features GPS sync-enabled TDMA protocol, which ensures that each client device precisely receives and transmits under the timing control of the access point. With protection from harsh environment and a range of mounting options, it is suitable for any deployment situation.

Sail Internet, a wireless service provider based in California’s San Francisco Bay Area, deployed a MicroPoP network in the large suburban community of Fremont that was suffering from poor legacy connectivity.

In October last year, Mimosa announced the B11 Backhaul radio with massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) technology. Designed for the modern bandwidth market, this fiber-speed, high-precision licensed radio is a cost-effective solution for ISPs to build out high-capacity, scalable wireless networks without having to lay fiber.

Mimosa’s initial entry into the licensed backhaul market, the B11 is unique in the industry with one radio covering the entire licensed 10.7-11.7 GHz spectrum, resulting in faster deployment through simplified equipment management and license procurement. For customers in the U.S., Mimosa’s network design tools provide instant insight into coordination success by providing a view of nearby licensed links across the band via the FCC licensed database.

Mimosa designed the B11 to be flexible to meet bandwidth directional demands, adapting the spectrum to meet immediate Internet traffic needs. As with all Mimosa backhaul products, the B11 uses spectrum analysis and load balancing to maximize bandwidth, frequency and power use based on real-time and historical data. The B11 is easy to deploy at only 4.5lbs, is low-power and ultra-reliable, with fully integrated lightning ESD protection and IP67 rating.
