Bringing Fiber-Like Speeds to the Philippines—Without the Fiber
This Proof of Concept with PLDT and its wireless arm, Smart Communications, Inc., showcases how Radisys and Mimosa Networks are helping deliver fiber-like broadband through Broadband Wireless Access (BWA) Solutions. The pilot demonstrates how Unlicensed Fixed Wireless Access can overcome the Philippines’ unique geographic challenges, providing a fast, scalable, and cost-effective alternative where fiber deployment is not practical.
PLDT—the Philippines’ largest integrated telco—and its wireless arm, Smart Communications, Inc., have launched a pilot project in partnership with Radisys, Mimosa Networks (part of the Radisys and Reliance Jio family), and local distributor Achieve Without Borders to deliver high-capacity Broadband Wireless Access (BWA) in regions where fiber is challenging to deploy. This initiative is part of PLDT and Smart’s broader strategy to expand broadband reach nationwide using the right mix of technologies for each environment.
The Philippines’ unique geography—with over 7,000 islands, mountainous terrain, and widespread rural communities—makes nationwide fiber rollouts both costly and time-consuming. In many locations, trenching for fiber or securing permits is not practical. PLDT and Smart needed an alternative approach that could still deliver the speed, stability, and scalability required by modern broadband customers.
As part of PLDT and Smart’s BWA platform, Radisys provides the overarching broadband architecture and integration expertise to unite multiple wireless technologies under one solution. Within this framework, Mimosa’s Point-to-Multipoint (PTMP) fixed wireless products—the A6 Access Point and C6x Client Radios—were deployed to deliver gigabit-class connectivity from a single wireless tower to multiple homes and businesses.
By combining Radisys’ systems expertise with Mimosa’s proven Unlicensed Fixed Wireless Access (UBR FWA) performance, the pilot showcases how service providers can deliver fiber-like speeds without the fiber—and do it faster, at a fraction of the cost and complexity.
The Proof of Concept (POC) achieved:
